The lozenge lies flat on the tongue rather than standing upright between tongue and palate, so tongue pressure is spread across the width of the tongue. Nothing slides, so the leverage arrives at full effect as soon as the rein is taken and the bit cannot move across the mouth. With the rein on the centre ring it works as a fixed cheek snaffle; on the lower loop poll pressure is introduced and the mouthpiece rotates back onto the tongue and bars.
