The Double Jointed Pelham with Copper Lozenge is designed for experienced riders looking for additional control while retaining a more considered feel through the mouthpiece.
The double-jointed stainless steel mouthpiece helps distribute pressure across the tongue and bars of the mouth, reducing the pronounced nutcracker action associated with a single-jointed design. At the centre, the copper lozenge creates a warmer feel in the mouth and encourages salivation and acceptance of the bit.
Designed to be ridden with two reins, the upper rein provides the more direct snaffle action, while the lower curb rein can be introduced when additional leverage is required. The Pelham can also be used with roundings and a single rein, bringing the mouthpiece and curb action into effect together.
When the curb rein is engaged, pressure is applied through the bars, chin and poll, making this a stronger option for horses where the rider requires greater control and refinement of the contact. The double-jointed mouthpiece moderates the directness of the curb action compared with some more severe Pelham mouthpieces.
A curb chain is supplied with the bit, while the small ring positioned above the curb can accommodate a lip strap to help keep the chain correctly positioned. This is particularly relevant for riders using a Pelham for showing.
